Glory
Ours or His?
Exodus 14:18
18 The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen."
Introduction
I first want to welcome every one to our first service at Sequoyah High school. We are so glad you are here. I want to start off by saying thank you to Ignition for all their hard work. Last week we rapped up our last Sunday at the old church with the subject of baptism. And a couple of you were baptized on Wednesday. And to those people I want to say congratulations, it’s a big step. This week we are going to start something but not finish it until next week. This week we are going to talk about Glory, Gods Glory. Let’s start off where most things started “In the Beginning”
In the Beginning
Genesis 1
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 Now the earth was [a] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
Genesis 2
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested [a] from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
So in the beginning God created all things and they were glorious. Can you just imagine the plants and animals? Everything that was made was made for God, All the fish in the sea, all the birds in the air, everything. But just when God had everything how he wanted he decided that something was missing. Then he said a-ha. "Let us make people in our image, in our likeness” so he made Adam the first man and Eve the first woman. Now it was how God wanted it. He had everything lined up perfectly to reflect His glory and greatness.
Stained Glory (ours)
So from the beginning of time God who created everything and us has deserved all the glory and highest honor, for if anything just being God. But there are a good many people out there that do not give the highest place of honor in there hearts to God. Why is that you think? Well it happened back in the beginning.
Genesis 3
The Fall of Man
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "
4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
So what do you think they (Adam and Eve) did. You got it they took and chowed down on that forbidden fruit. Why do you think that they did such a thing? God had told them not too. Were they just hungry? Who thinks they were just hungry. Nope I don’t think that’s what it was. They were disobedient to Gods word and with disobedience comes trouble. Let me give you an example on disobedience. Watch this clip. (Lesson 28 Bible connection DVD) the two boys in the clip were disobedient to their mom and their sister paid the price. So why did they do it? Why did Adam and Eve eat the fruit?
Stealing Gods Thunder (glory)
Have you ever saw something that someone else had that you wished you had? I mean have you ever wanted something someone else had really, really bad.
Me too, I had a friend once who was good at everything. He had everything going for him. He was good at school and sports and video games. You name it he was good at it. Then one day he got a game boy. Everybody say “game boy”. So he got a game boy and this was back when game boys first came out. And he was the most popular boy around all because he had a game boy. Oh did I want it so bad. I wanted a Game boy with all that was in me, because it made him popular. He got tons of glory for having that game boy and I wanted some for myself. I was the same as Adam & Eve. See God had all the Glory and rightfully so because he is God but when the serpent said. "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." A light bulb went off in their heads. If we eat this we will be like God. They saw all the glory that God has and thought “wow I want a little bit of that for myself.” That’s why they took the fruit. You maybe thinking to yourself right now how does apply to me I wouldn’t have taken the fruit.” Well think back when was the last time you knew that what you were doing was wrong and you did it anyway. Do you have that in your mind right now? At that moment when you did it anyway it was the same as taking the forbidden fruit.
What is God to do?
What is God to do in this situation? His creation, the creation he made in his likeness Tried to steel his glory, the glory that only he deserves. If you were God what would you do? We would try and get even right that’s what we normally try and do. I bet you guys are all wondering why I have this beautiful painting here. Well this painting is symbolic of creation, beautiful in all its glory, and all of that glory reflecting back to God. And then we made the choice to try and take a little of Gods Glory (Black Hand of paint down the canvas) but you know what God said. He said I am going to use that, I am going to use that and I will gain glory from it. And that’s what we are going to talk about next Sunday what God did and is doing.
